Location: Laurel ABLinks to recorded presentations were removed from Sched on June 15. All registered attendees have received an email with direct links for access. Recordings will remain available only for registered attendees until they are released to the public on NASIG's YouTube channel, after an embargo. This session will describe two NISO initiatives, the creation of Recommended Practices for "E-Book Bibliographic Metadata Requirements in the Sale, Publication, Discovery, and Preservation Supply Chain" and "Assessment of Video and Audio Metadata Recommendations and Standards for Academic, Research and /Professional Information." These separate working groups are working to provide support for libraries and content providers who wish to provide discovery and access to important modern forms of information publication.
The E-Book Metadata Recommended Practice has just been published by NISO, and the Video and Audio Metadata Recommended Practice has recently been available for comment before finalization and publication. In neither of these areas is there a single authority for metadata and the varied stakeholders (libraries, publishers, supporting vendors, preservation entities, etc.) encompass a wide range of requirements for their applications, to the eventual detriment of metadata consumers and end users. The neutral forum that NISO provides encourages varied stakeholders (some of whom may be competitors) to engage with each other and build consensus around solutions to mutual problems.
We will talk about the need for the NISO projects, the study the working groups gathered on these fragmented landscapes and decisions they made to try to remedy the gaps, how these Recommended Practices might be further adopted and used by their target communities, and even what might be future steps in these areas of work.
